Could God have created a better world?

I know exactly what you are thinking: “Oh man! Does he know what he’s getting himself into?!” Actually, I do… I think I do.

Take a look around you. What do you see? Complete and perfect happiness? No. Sickness, disease, natural disasters, terrorists, torture, abuse, murder. This is not the picture of God’s masterpiece… right?

This is where you put your thinking caps on. It’ll be interesting to see where this discussion ends and maybe we’ll learn something together. Could God have created a better world? A world without evil? Without suffering? More health? More sunny weather? More love? Wouldn’t that make more sense?

a world with more love would need less love, negating the necessity of Christ's virgin birth and sacrificial death. without suffering, there would be no need to love and help others in need. without health, there would be no death and birth. without evil, there would be not good to oppose it....
and more sunny weather would mean that there would be less rainy days to sleep or lay around or cuddle with your significant other, and nobody wants that, do they?

heres the question,, if god is perfect (and you all agree he is)and the world is his creation and this world is less than perfect, then did god create an imperfect thing? or did god mean to have thw world like it is today?

hair splitter! God did not mean for it to be like this, but he hasn't stopped it yet because he wants us to do what we can, to "go unto all nations, teaching them and baptizing them" we are the reason that the world is the way it is. it is becuase of our sin. every problem the world is having can be taken back to sin. try me. i'm up to the challenge.

"God saw all that He had made, and it was very good..." (Genesis 1:31)
it just doesn't make sense that God would say, "this is good stuff but someday I'll do better."
but is that what God was thinking? maybe i need to ask another question to clear things up a little.

is God limited?

great. now don't get mad at me for asking so many questions; but can God sin?

nope. and when you think about it, sin is essentially ungodlyness. so if god were to murder someone out of hate, thats would be what god did, thus making it godly, therefore it wouldnt be a sin. but i dont think thats exactly what you meant. its just something i thought of awhile ago.

sweet. you guys are good thinkers! it is a tough question and i still struggle with it sometimes. it makes sense that God would be unlimited and yet unable to sin. maybe both are possible like Jared was implying.

anyway... where were we going with this?... oh yeah. so if God is unlimited then He can do anything like Emily says. then it would makes sense that God is all powerful so he can make a better world than this one. but something still makes me uncomfortable with this statement.

let's go back to the original question. could God have created a better world? Yoshi and Julio imply "no". Emily states "yes". i guess it all depends on what you define as "a better world". i guess it all boils down to this:

how should we determine that which is "better"?

...by the way, thanks for all the comments! this is a lot of fun for me to see different views of a topic.

great answer Emily! you hit the nail on the head! "it's all for His glory and honor"! this is what i believe (it's not necessarily true but it makes the most sence to me):

to answer the initial question we have to look at what would be "better" through God's eyes. it's all about His glory, so every thing He does brings glory to Him. I believe that one action of His cannot bring more glory than the previous. God knows best and we can count on Him always doing best. God can never be diminished so i believe that even this evil world is infinetly glorifying God - maybe not on purpose but its happening. the question is a trick question as it seems to limit God, but it really doesn't. His decision to give us free will and allow the world to become evil still gives Him all the glory. that's my view. i'm not saying that i'm possitive it is the correct answer but it is the most logical to me.

i dont think sin can glorify god. cuz if it could, then we wouldnt even have to try to glorify him.

(and that was as much of a question as it was a statement)

hmmmmm. good call. i guess what i should say is that God doesn't depend on the world to be glorified. ...? maybe we're getting into issues we weren't meant to understand.

try this one - if God told us to do whatever we wanted and it wouldn't matter, would we be able to sin or enjoy God's presence?

god did tell us we could do whatever we wanted. its called choice. but he also told us about a little something called concequences.

and that we don't get to choose the consequences even if we make the choices. it kinda stinks, but when you logically think about it, it makes sense. that way we have some semblance of order.

god is a god of order. or at least thats what i always was tought,,,

mr hiem said it in his explanations of how if we hate math, we hate god.

If God was a god of disorder, would the disorder be order because He is God?
