Chapter O N E

Blood was about to be spilt. The two armies could now see each other. Excited and intimidating cries came from both sides. The armies flashed their weapons in the bright sunlight. Then the commanders yelled the orders and the charge began. In little time the armies would meet.

Gareb didn’t doubt that he would survive this one. Both sides were almost identical in numbers and skill but he was definitely one of the best warriors present in this battle. He was confident that his exceptional speed and blocking skills would bring him through in one piece yet again.

As the gap between the armies closed, Gareb focused on the eyes of his approaching opponent. He calmly lowered his sword and paid attention to every move the enemy soldier made.

Then the armies met. They clashed violently like two tidal waves in the ocean. The noise grew as weapons started swinging and bodies started falling.

Gareb predicted his opponent’s actions perfectly. He easily dodged his enemy’s wild slash. The momentum took the enemy past Gareb and allowed Gareb to make a quick swipe into his enemies back. Spinning around, he slashed into the next unprepared enemy soldier. Then Gareb had to block a couple swings from another soldier. But on the second block Gareb forced the enemy’s weapon down ward and then brought his own sword up and into his chest. Gareb then noticed that one of his fellow soldiers was struggling with a strong enemy soldier. He ran up behind them jabbed his weapon into the soldier’s back. Gareb turned around just in time to find a blade flying for his head. He ducked just before he dispatched his attacker.

Finally, there was only one enemy soldier left. Gareb’s army surrounded the lonely soldier and went at him from all sides. Victory was near. But to Gareb’s horror, his fellow soldiers began to fall. One after another they fell victim to the blade of the enemy until they began to back off, too afraid to oppose this skill. Gareb stepped forward knowing that if anyone could defeat this soldier, it was him. To Gareb’s surprise, he recognized the soldier; it was his cousin, Jonathan! Never the less, Gareb raised his sword and went forth.

The two soldiers exchanged slashes and blocks, each of them looking out for a single weakness in the other. Although they knew each other fairly well, they had never fought before and now they were beginning to realize that they were both fairly gifted with the sword. They fought for a few minutes, each of them wondering if the other would make a mistake. Gareb tried to confuse Jonathan by swinging his sword toward Jonathan’s feet, allowing it to be blocked, and then spinning around to come at his head from the other side. But Jonathan had seen that movement before and he blocked both slashes, knocking Gareb’s sword out of his hand. Then Jonathan’s sword came hard into Gareb’s chest. It was over. Gareb had been defeated for the first time in months.

"Jonathan, I've heard that you are a great fighter,” Gareb said. “But you must have cheated some how.”

Jonathan shrugged and helped Gareb up off the ground. “I hit you kind of hard. Is your chest alright?”

Gareb nodded but rubbed his apex. “I'm gonna tell your dad! But, yeah, I’ve been hit harder before. You’ve got to be willing to take hits to play games like this.”

All of the kids that had been killed in the game started getting up and started talking excitedly about how the round went. They started to split up into armies again but the two cousins opted out of this one.

As they started walking away, Jonathan said, “Gareb, you are very gifted with the sword.”

Gareb laughed out loud. “Sword? Last I checked these things were still called sticks. I’d say I’m skilled with the stick. Or better yet, an imaginary sword. Yes, that is what I will be known for! Give me a Philistine that’s willing to fight with pretend swords and I’ve got him beat!”

Jonathan smiled and shook his head, “Stick, sword—same basic concept. Seriously, I think that if you were given a real sword and if you gained just a little more strength, you’d easily become a very skilled fighter.”

Gareb blushed and he shoved his older cousin in the shoulder. “I can’t believe my mature cousin, Jonathan, is saying this to me. You truly have an amazing ability as a fighter--but apparently you're not skilled enough to realize that I am not.” Gareb changed the subject. “I kind of lost track of time. Have they cast the lots yet?”

Jonathan nodded. “You naughty boy missed it some time ago, actually. In fact, this is the reason I came to find you. My father was chosen.”

Gareb’s eyes widened and he threw an arm around Jonathan’s shoulders. “Hallelujah! My very own cousin’s father is the king of Israel! Are you excited?”

“A bit,” he said sarcastically. “And do you know what this means?”

Gareb answered, “You and your father will be leading us to drive out these infidel Philistines from our lands! We will be free again! I can’t wait!”

Jonathan nodded. “Even though I’m a little young to be in the Hebrew army, my father is most likely going to allow me to take part in it. …And every member in the royal family needs an armor bearer. I was wondering if you would be willing to be my armor bearer.”

Gareb stopped in his tracks. “Me? You don’t know how much that would mean to me! But I’m so young. And so are you. Do you really think that your father would give us a place in the military?”

“I’m certain. We’re only a couple years short of the fighting age. But by the time we finish training and it is time to drive the Philistines out, we’ll be a whole year closer.”

Gareb was overflowing with excitement. “Real training? I can’t wait! I was never too interested in working in my father’s crops. My brothers are going to be jealous!”

As they neared the town square, Gareb noticed that there was a lot of hubbub and noise coming from the crowd. “What’s going on?” he asked.

Jonathan answered, “They’re looking for my father to tell him that he’s been chosen. For some reason he’s been missing all day.”

~~~
Down in one of the alleys next to the town fortress was where all the travelers had left their baggage. Families from all over the tribe of Benjamin had traveled here to Mizpah for the momentous event that would determine who would become the first king of Israel. It had been a long process, but the Hebrew people were finally getting what they were asking for: a king just like all the other nations. Saul was chosen. And as the people cheered and sang and danced, their new king was among the baggage--hiding.
A few weeks earlier, the prophet Samuel had already told Saul that the Lord was going to choose him. As Saul entered the town earlier that morning, he became extremely scared and nervous. The tall farmer hid in the shadow of the alley and processed the same thoughts over and over in his mind all day long: “Can I do this? Can I be king? Do I have that ability? Will I mess it up? Will it be hard for me? Will it be worth it for me? What will I have to sacrifice? What do I have to gain? Why me? Can I do this? Can I?”
But the people refused to listen to Samuel. "No!" they said. "We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles."
When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the Lord. The Lord answered, "Listen to them and give them a king."
Open-Mindedness?
Yeeeeeee-hah! …So I’ve got another couple questions. I’ve got a little bit of an opinion on both of these questions but I need help from you guys to develop it! They are inspired by the song “One Trick Pony” by Mercy Me. (If you can’t hear it then it usually helps to push the PLAY button. Then if it still doesn’t work then too bad for you.)
The world has finally accepted the Christian notion that we should accept everyone and have taken it to a new level! I would even say they do it better than Christians now. Behold, the philosophies of universalism! Not only should you love every one but you should also accept their beliefs as truth--even if it seems that your truth contradicts theirs. Don’t worry about it because they are perfectly compatible. This is what it means to be completely open-minded. And in our country you are expected to be absolutely open-minded or else you are a bias racist, sexist, rankest, and any other not so nice -ist words that you can make up. But I wonder. How many of them are truly open-minded themselves? I would have to say the number is somewhere around… NONE!
Read the second verse of Mercy Me‘s song:
If I hear just one more time
That I should be more open-minded
I think I just might scream
This world says this is all there is
Yet I believe the one who says there’s life after this
Now tell me, how much more open can my mind be?
At Ivy Tech, it seems that all the professors, staff, managers, sponsers, students, and their backpacks are liberal and are supposed open-mindists. It’s humorous… or rather sad to see my fellow students and professors try to convince me that their open-mindedness is the best way to go. They say that I need to leave truth alone and just stick with small talk--that is, unless I’m bashing Bush and fretting about global warming. They try to tell me to accept all religions because in reality they want me to believe that religion is a stupid, feel-good activity for the uneducated. They aren’t open-minded.
So tell me this first. What is true open-mindedness? (that’s a tough one isn’t it?) Then we can attempt to answer: Can a person be open-minded forever?
I don't need reminding
To look after myself
So maybe when you wave good by
You could think of something else
I don't need reminding
Who is number one
On my list of priorities
All is said and done
Yeah, well, I've never grown
From the terrible two's
Don't you know? I just learned to hide it
From all of you
music review III: The Face of Love & 97.7FM
Sanctus Real’s previous album “Fight the Tide” is to me an example of what I think shows the true reason why electric guitars were created. If pure noise is ever a beautiful thing (which I believe it can be) “Fight the Tide” captures that beauty. A while ago Banke$ wrote something about orchestra instruments being what makes a rock song good--which I agree. But Sanctus Real does so well with guitars that I’d have to say it’s their skill with the guitars that make the music in “Fight the Tide” sound so cool. It now stands just below my favorite albums of all time which are Jesus Adrian’s “El Aire De Tu Casa” and Mercy Me’s Christmas album (yes, even in October).
But in Sanctus Real’s latest album “The Face of Love” they disappointed me greatly. I got the CD because the first song is really good (the one playing now). After that there are a couple okay songs but they still lacked the quality of their previous album. Their climatic choruses, catchy melodies, beautiful blend of distortion, and cool background vocals can only be found in one of their new songs. Instead of their thick, juicy, meaty, chunky, guitar sound that I had come to love, they’ve begun to experiment with high-pitched, screechy distortion. Unlike in “Tide” the cymbals in “Face” often drown out the meatyness that is there. Also, another thing that I love about “Tide” is the background vocals. In “Face” their lead vocalist seems to have decided that his voice is good enough to sing all their songs on his own. Don’t get me wrong: the guy has a good voice, it just shouldn’t be alone. Finally, the words for most of the choruses are very repetitive therefore making the songs old and boring very quickly. As far as the words go, they did a great job at keeping it convicting and original and poetic. But a good album must have the right combination of both lyrics and music.
Sure, they sort of have some excuses. They had a few deaths in their family and their main guitarist decided to leave the band. So now they're with a new guitarist. It bugs me that they went ahead and made an album when they weren't ready and I went ahead and bought it. Uhg!
It’s like they’ve become just a standard band on 97.7FM here in Lafayette. Don’t get me wrong--about 30% of the songs on 97.7 are fairly good (still not the best), but the rest just seem unorganized, unrehearsed, and uncreative. This means that you are much more likely to catch a song of horrible quality and second-rate talent than to get the sort-of-good stuff. It’s kind of sad that we have like 5 Christian radio stations here in Lafayette and the one that has the most contemporary stuff has cheap stuff and a-little-better-than-cheap stuff. I mean, how much money, time, and energy does it cost a guy to have an electric guitar and sing some lyrics to some repetitive cords? I mean really, why are you people wasting your time? Let’s see some talent! Why don’t most contemporary artists at least try to add some variety and uniqueness to their band? Don’t they want to make a big impression to their world? Then why does it seem they aren’t trying very hard at all?
Anyway, all that to say that Christian artists need to make sure they are producing stuff that reflects better their ability and cause. Contemporary music should reveal more of that beauty in music that has yet to be discovered! It’s not like every single piece of good music has already been written! The study of music is never ending! Do something unique! And work hard at it! It’s not like I have already conquered the challenges of being original but God didn’t give us these talents so that we could be second-rate. He wants excellence.
Anyway, I've got a really good post that I'll have to write within the next few months about rock music that will be very interesting!
